Creating tiled mosaics is a physically demanding process, wherein I use a hammer (and safety glasses!) to smash large pieces of ceramic into smaller pieces. After collecting the smaller pieces, I reassemble them into a variety of forms, incorporating the jagged shapes and vibrant colors into aesthetically balanced three dimensional collages. The final pieces have included front door house numbers, picture frames, potted planters, or stand-alone wall pieces. The process of breaking into shards and reassembling them into something new and beautiful brings to my mind two concepts of personal meaning: "Tikkun Olam" - the Jewish community's concept of seeking to heal a broken world, and "E pluribus unum" - the American motto - out of many, one.
